On June 26, 2025, the first meeting of the Multi-Stakeholder Water Management Committee was held in Tashkent under the UNDP/GEF project “Conservation and Sustainable Management of Lakes, Wetlands, and Riparian Corridors as Pillars of a Resilient and Land Degradation Neutral Aral Basin Landscape Supporting Sustainable Livelihoods.”
The Committee was established to coordinate efforts among key ministries, government agencies, scientific institutions, and other stakeholders, with the aim of advancing a climate-resilient, coordinated, and inclusive approach to water resource management in the Lower Amu Darya and Aral Sea Basin.
Climate change is increasing rainfall variability and intensifying water scarcity, especially for vulnerable ecosystems such as lakes, wetlands, and floodplains in the Amu Darya Delta. Inefficient water allocation, land degradation, and loss of biodiversity demand urgent, science-based, and collaborative responses. The Committee serves as a key political and institutional platform to support the implementation of the project by providing strategic direction and inter-agency coordination.
The meeting was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Ecology, Ministry of Water Resources, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Construction and Housing and Communal Services, the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS), the Amu Darya Basin Water Organization, scientific institutions, and other interested parties.
Official presentation of the Multi-Stakeholder Committee and its mandate
Presentation of the composition and upcoming tasks of the Multi-Stakeholder Working Group
Initiation of discussions on priority activities for 2025–2026.
The establishment of the Committee is a major step towards ensuring sustainable water distribution and preserving ecological balance under the pressures of climate change. It will also play a critical role in the coordination and approval of Integrated Water Management Plans (IWMPs) in the four priority districts of the Lower Amu Darya.
